- Description: Candide is a character created by Voltaire, the pen name of François-Marie Arouet, in his famous novel of the same name published in 1759. Candide is a young naive man who is educated in the philosophy of optimism by Pangloss, his tutor. However, Candide's experiences lead him to question this optimistic view of the world. Through a series of tumultuous and often comedic adventures, Candide travels the world, encountering characters from all walks of life and facing challenging situations. The character of Candide represents human naivety and the desire to find happiness in a world that is often cruel and disillusioned

Meanwhile, all the travellers whom Candide met in the inns along his route, said to him, "We go to Paris." This general eagerness at length gave him, too, a desire to see this capital; and it was not so very great a détour from the road to Venice. He entered Paris by the suburb of St. Marceau, and fancied that he was in the dirtiest village of Westphalia.

The two main characters of the book are the narrator, Sal Paradise, and his friend Dean Moriarty, much admired for his carefree attitude and sense of adventure, a free-spirited maverick eager to explore all kicks and an inspiration and catalyst for Sal's travels. The novel contains five parts, three of them describing road trips with Dean. The narrative takes place in the years 1947 to 1950, is full of Americana, and marks a specific era in jazz history, "somewhere between its Charlie Parker Ornithology period and another period that began with Miles Davis" (Pt. 1, Ch. 3). The novel is largely autobiographical, Sal being the alter ego of the author and Dean standing for Neal Cassady. Like Kerouac, Sal Paradise is a writer who published two books over the course of the plot, even though the names are not known.

- Description: In the parody of 'Around the World In Eighty Days', it is Uncle Scrooge rather than Phileas Fogg who makes a bet with other members of his club. In this case it is the Billionaires Club, and he bets that he can go around the world in eight days - without spending a penny. He sets off not with Passepartout, but with Donald Duck, and they travel by air - in an improvised hot-air balloon - rather than by sea. In India, Donald's choice of transport is a sacred cow rather than an elephant. This sacrilege leads to his arrest, and he then has to be rescued by Uncle Scrooge. The parody concludes with Uncle Scrooge's arrival back at the Billionaires Club within the time limit. However, he loses the bet because Donald took a 20-cent bus ride...
