In 1873, Webb was serving as captain of the steamship Emerald when he read an account of the failed attempt by J. B. Johnson to swim the English Channel. He became inspired to try himself, and left his job to begin training, first at Lambeth Baths, then in the cold waters of the Thames, the English Channel and Hollingworth Lake.
- Description: In 1860, Edward Payson Weston made a bet: if Abraham Lincoln were elected, he would walk from Boston to Washington DC to attend the inauguration. On February 22, 1861, he started the journey, which took 10 days. The route was full of unforeseen issues and problems, causing him to lose the bet by just a few hours. However, it was a triumphant loss: welcomed by Lincoln himself, he made a living from his walks. In 1867, he reached Chicago from Portland, Maine (1'900 km) in 26 days, earning $10'000. In the 1870s, he organized several indoor events that further highlighted his abilities, becoming the first person to walk 400 miles (640 km) in 5 days and 500 miles (800 km) in 6 days. At the age of 70, he allowed himself to walk the trans-American route from New York to San Francisco, covering 4'000 miles in 104 days, 4 more than predicted in the bet. His last major challenge took place in 1913, at the age of 74: from New York to Minneapolis. In 1927, he was hit by a taxi in New York. Confined to a wheelchair, he died two years later, at the age of 90
