His first solo trip began in 1973 and included extended travels through China, the Caribbean, Central America (by bus), apartheid-era Southern Africa - including Zimbabwe and Southwest Africa during rebel attacks - Europe (with an arrest in Vienna), Southeast Asia (where he recounts a kidnapping in Sarawak), and South America (Peru, Chile, Argentina) during periods of political unrest.
