- Description: John Gill was a British motorcycle traveller from Bradford, Yorkshire. Between 1928 and 1930 he completed a round-the-world journey of approximately 37,000 km (23,000 miles) on an HRD-Noxal sidecar outfit. Walter Stephens, from London, rode pillion from England to Australia, where he abandoned the venture. The Australian engineer Phil Irving then joined Gill as pillion rider for the return leg to England. Back in Britain, Irving went on to become the engineering partner of Vincent motorcycles. During the journey Gill was imprisoned for 14 days in Constantinople over a passport dispute and was shot at by Bedouins while crossing the Syrian desert
