Over the next three years he covered 99,779 km (62,000 miles) across 35 countries on five continents — riding north to Alaska, south through Central and South America to Tierra del Fuego, across Africa from Cape Town to Cairo, through the Middle East and Europe, and back across the United States — returning home in 2008. Along the way he broke his leg in three places in the Bolivian Andes, was escorted at gunpoint into the Colombian jungle, and was denied entry into Iran three times
