McDonald Jamie (w3350)

  • Description: Born in Gloucester, England, in 1986, Jamie McDonald spent the first nine years of his life in and out of hospital due to a rare spinal condition (syringomyelia), combined with epilepsy and immune deficiency. After his recovery, he undertook a series of extreme endurance adventures to raise funds for the children's hospitals that had treated him. In 2012, he cycled 14,000 miles (22,526 km) from Bangkok to Gloucester. Just days later, he set a Guinness World Record for marathon static cycling, pedalling for 268 hours (over 11 days). In 2013–2014, he became the first person to run the 5,000 miles (8,047 km) across Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast without a support crew, enduring temperatures of −40°C. In 2018–2019, he completed a similar crossing of the United States, covering 5,500 miles (8,851 km), the equivalent of 210 marathons. In May 2019, he set a second Guinness World Record by covering 524 miles (843 km) on a treadmill in seven days. Through his Superhero Foundation, he has raised over $1,000,000 for sick children worldwide
