- Description: John Paul Gerber was an author, historian, librarian, and motorcyclist. Enthusiastic about European scooters such as Vespas, Lambrettas, and Heinkels, he amassed over 412,000 km (about 256,000 mi) of travel across five continents. He rode his first scooter at age 14 and had covered almost 40,000 km in North America by age 21. In 1966, he undertook a roughly 18,000 km round trip from Minnesota to Panama on a Vespa GS 160. In 1971, he completed a solo journey of 40,000 km from Wisconsin down the east coast of South America to Tierra del Fuego, and back up the west coast; his trip toward Alaska was cut short due to a collision in Hayward, California
