Kesey Ken (w3112)
- Description: In November 1963, Ken Kesey traveled to New York City with his wife Faye and George Walker to attend the Broadway opening of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," based on his 1962 novel. During the trip, he visited the construction site of the 1964 New York World's Fair. In 1964, Kesey had to return to New York for the publication party of his novel "Sometimes a Great Notion" and planned to visit the Fair. This plan evolved into an ambitious expedition with a group of friends, inspired by Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road." As more people joined the trip, the group outgrew Kesey's car, so he bought an old yellow school bus for $1'250. The bus, originally equipped for the seller's family vacations, was further customized by the Pranksters with a generator, a sound system, a rooftop platform, and an observation turret. The bus was painted in psychedelic colors and named "Furthur" by artist Roy Sebern, as inspiration to keep going despite difficulties. The bus's last journey was to the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Afterwards, it was used on Kesey's farm in Oregon until 1983, when it was abandoned in a swamp. Eventually, it was recovered and stored in a farm warehouse
