Beard John W. and Lulu (w1690)

  • Description: A great many equestrian travelers have been inspired by the feats of those who rode before them. However, John Beard stands out as the only horseback traveler directly influenced by the legendary Buffalo Bill Cody. As a child, after visiting Cody's iconic Wild West show, Beard dreamed of experiencing the Wild West on horseback. It took over sixty years from seeing the flamboyant showman for Beard and his wife Lulu to embark on their dream journey. In 1948, riding a matched pair of horses, Black Diamond and Black Fairy, the Beards set off to traverse the Old Oregon Trail. Their 2'500-mile journey from Oregon to Missouri was a testament to endurance, braving weariness, thirst, hunger, hardship, and danger as they followed the path of their pioneer ancestors. Their adventure, richly documented with photographs, is captured in "Saddles East"
