- Description: According to contemporary press reports, Demetrio Dann, a Romanian globe-trotter, was undertaking a round-the-world journey on foot. By the time of his appearance in Lugano, he had already covered about 19,000 km (11,800 miles) and claimed to have visited 75 countries. Originally accompanied by four companions, he continued alone after the others died during the journey. He had about 1,000 km (620 miles) left to complete the trip and win a wager. Dann reportedly spoke twelve languages and said he had worn out nearly 500 pairs of sandals. Postcards circulated during his travels portrayed him in distinctive clothing, carrying a large staff, and styling himself as “world champion of the 100,000 kilometers” (62,100 miles)

The Rogers brothers from Millbury, Massachusetts made an interesting 4000-mile bicycle ride to the Pacific coast in the summer of 1890, but it is not known what type of wheels they rode. It seems likely that they used some type of ordinary for the 1890 chain driven safeties were not yet well suited to long rides. If the brothers had arrived in Portland, Oregon on safeties, the newspaper correspondent covering their arrival would likely have commented on the this unusual fact rather than simply noting that "the wheels ridden are still in good condition."

Nell'ottobre 1900 l’egregio nostro concittadino dr.
