J. S. Fry, a passenger on the Tenyo Maru, which arrived here this morning, is a millionaire and son of J. S. Fry, the well-known chocolate manufacturer. This fact, however, seems to be overshadowed by the Fry’s twenty-one months old baby, which has traveled 45,000 miles in its short life.
The San Francisco Examiner has the following to say on the subject, and gives some pictures of the baby and its amah (nurse):
Conrad Greer Fry, aged twenty-one months, at the St. Francis, is for his age the champion globe-trotter of the world. Up to date his traveling record is 45,000 miles. Today he departs on the Japanese liner Tenyo Maru for another globe-encircling jaunt, and before he is two summers and winters old he will have added 20,000 more miles to his record.
Baby Fry was born at Santa Barbara April 21, 1910, and his mother is a former San Francisco beauty. Under international law, however, he is British by nationality, his father being a subject of King George.
His traveling party
With this little globe-trotter are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Fry, and his aunt, the mother’s sister, Mrs. William Beeson of this city, who is to be one of the traveling party. Mrs. Fry is a daughter of the late Thomas B. Shannon of this city, who at one time was a State Senator, Collector of the Port and in Civil War times a Congressman. The father is a son of J. S. Fry, the millionaire head of the noted cocoa manufacturers, J. S. Fry & Sons, Ltd., Bristol, England.
It is in Reading, England, where Baby Fry and his parents have a home and they are departing from California via the Orient at this time in order to be home for the second birthday of the jewel of the household.
Vocabulary is limited
Lisping “Papa” and “Mama” is the extent of the present vocabulary of this mite of a traveler. Bitten as he has been by the travel bug, he may have many impressions of what he has seen. But he is not ready to talk or write a book about them.
Some mighty interesting things have happened to this little modern successor of Sir John Mandeville.
On the China Sea he cut his first tooth. In Colombo, Ceylon, he did his first creeping stunt, while in far-away Calcutta, with listening, eager ear, his doting parents heard his first linguistic efforts when he said “Papa” and “Mama.” He did his first walking in England.
Master Fry can also claim to have been in California twice. He and his parents have been at Santa Barbara this winter and are in town to catch today’s steamer.
