Burnest Heard (w1752)

  • Description: Burnest Heard, who called himself the "World's Greatest Lover", embarked on a remarkable journey, walking from Vancouver, BC to Halifax, NS and back. Starting on June 1, 1937, he completed the first leg of his trip in 19 months, arriving in Halifax in December 1939. To emphasize that he did not hitchhike, Heard pushed a 150-pound oil drum across the country. He financed his journey by selling postcards of himself for 10 cents each, claiming to have sold 18'000, and paid for his own accommodations and meals. After resting in Halifax, he began his return trip on February 1, 1940, taking nearly three years to get back to Vancouver in December 1942. His first cross-country journey was extensively covered in newspapers across the US and Canada, whereas his return journey received attention only in the Canadian media
