Yorick's journey starts in Calais, where he meets a monk who begs for donations to his convent. Yorick initially refuses to give him anything, but later regrets his decision. He and the monk exchange their snuff-boxes. He buys a chaise to continue his journey. The next town he visits is Montreuil, where he hires a servant to accompany him on his journey, a young man named La Fleur.

During his stay in Paris, Yorick is informed that the police inquired for his passport at his hotel. Without a passport at a time when England is at war with France (Sterne traveled to Paris in January 1762, before the Seven Years' War ended[2]), he risks imprisonment in the Bastille. Yorick decides to travel to Versailles where he visits the Count de B**** to acquire a passport. When Yorick notices the count reads Hamlet, he points with his finger at Yorick's name, mentioning that he is Yorick. The count mistakes him for the king's jester and quickly procures him a passport. Yorick fails in his attempt to correct the count, and remains satisfied with receiving his passport so quickly.

Yorick returns to Paris, and continues his voyage to Italy after staying in Paris for a few more days. Along the way he decides to visit Maria—who was introduced in Sterne's previous novel, Tristram Shandy—in Moulins. Maria's mother tells Yorick that Maria has been struck with grief since her husband died. Yorick consoles Maria, and then leaves.

After having passed Lyon during his journey, Yorick spends the night in a roadside inn. Because there is only one bedroom, he is forced to share the room with a lady and her chamber-maid ("fille de chambre"). When Yorick can't sleep and accidentally breaks his promise to remain silent during the night, an altercation with the lady ensues. During the confusion, Yorick accidentally grabs hold of something belonging to the chamber-maid. The last line is: "when I stretch'd out my hand I caught hold of the fille de chambre's...End of vol II". The sentence is open to interpretation. You can say the last word is omitted, or that he stretched out his hand, and caught hers (this would be grammatically correct). Another interpretation is to incorporate 'End of Vol. II' into the sentence, so that he grabs the Fille de Chambre's 'End'.

The 1908 New York to Paris Race was an automobile competition consisting of drivers attempting to travel from New York to Paris. This was a considerable challenge given the state of automobile technology and road infrastructure at the time. Only three of six contestants completed the course. The winner was the American team, driving a 1907 Thomas Flyer.

In 1907 the Peking to Paris automobile race had inspired an even bolder test of these new machines. The following year the course would be from New York City, USA, to Paris, France, with a planned 150-mile (240 km) ship passage from Nome, Alaska, across the Bering Strait to East CapeSiberia.

The race, which was the first of its kind among automobiles, commenced in Times Square on February 12, 1908. Six cars representing four nations were at the starting line for what would become a 169-day ordeal (making it, in terms of time taken, still the longest motorsport event ever held). GermanyFranceItaly, and the United States participated, with the Protos representing Germany, a Zust representing Italy, three cars (De Dion-BoutonMotobloc, and Sizaire-Naudin) representing France, and a Thomas Flyer representing the United States. At 11:15 AM a gunshot signaled the start of the race. Ahead of the competitors were very few paved roads, and in many parts of the world no roads at all. Often, the teams resorted to straddling locomotive rails with their cars riding tie to tie on balloon tires for hundreds of miles when no roads could be found.

The American Thomas Flyer was in the lead after crossing the United States and arriving in San Francisco in 41 days, 8 hours, and 15 minutes. It was the first crossing of the US by an automobile in winter.

The route then took them to Valdez, Alaska, by ship. Then Thomas crew found impossible conditions in Alaska and the race was rerouted across the Pacific by steamer to Japan where the Americans made their way across to the Sea of Japan. Then it was on to VladivostokSiberia, by ship to begin crossing the continents of Asia and Europe. Only three of the competitors made it past Vladivostok: the Protos, the Züst, and the Flyer.

The wet plains of Siberia and Manchuria during the spring thaw made progress difficult. At several points, forward movement was often measured in feet rather than miles per hour. Eventually, the roads improved as Europe approached and the Thomas arrived in Paris on July 30, 1908, to win, having covered approx 16,700 km. The Germans, driven by Hans Koeppen, arrived in Paris four days earlier, but had been penalized a total of 30 days for not going to Japan and for shipping the Protos part of the way by railcar. That gave the win to the Americans with George Schuster (the only American to go the full distance from New York to Paris) by 26 days (still the largest winning margin in any motorsport event ever). The Italians arrived later in September 1908.

The race was of international interest with daily front page coverage by The New York Times (a cosponsor of the race with the Parisian newspaper Le Matin). The significance of the event extended far beyond the race itself. Together with the Peking to Paris race which took place the year before it established the reliability of the automobile as a dependable means of transportation, eventually taking the automobile from an amusement of the rich to a reliable and viable means of long distance transportation for the masses. It also led to the call for improved roads to be constructed in many parts of the world.

The winning driver George Schuster was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame on October 12, 2010.

The winning Thomas Flyer is on display in Reno, Nevada, at the National Automobile Museum, alongside the trophy.

Nel 1908, l’auto 28/45HP Züst N. 127 a quattro cilindri partecipò alla folle gara New York – Parigi, un rally di 35.000 km, quasi tutto su strade terribili, primitive o inesistenti. Una simile gara non era mai stata tentata prima e gli uomini che partivano non potevano immaginare quello che avrebbero trovato sul percorso. Le Züst avevano già una storia di successi nelle gare, con buoni risultati nella Coppa d’Oro e nella Targa Florio del 1907. Negli Stati Uniti l’auto del marchio italiano avevano partecipato alla corsa di Long Island del Giugno 1906, guidata da Raymond Healy.

Enough of the hyperbole, let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of this charity rally.

Only the courageous need apply. The journey of a lifetime begins with a single step: summoning up the courage to sign-up for the Mongolia Charity Rally.

Pick your team. After crossing the Rubicon, there is no going back. Unless you break down, in which case there might be. The next step is to pick your posse. You’re going to spend a month rallying halfway across the world with this team, so think long and hard about who the most annoying people you know are, and make sure not to ask them. Teams are usually made up of between two to four people.

Pick a Route: Pick a country, any country… then drive through it. As long as you end up in Mongolia, this part is the easy part. You don’t even need a map. If you want to try to get to Mongolia by asking people the way, that works. We know. We’ve done it.

Pick a car. Ambulance? Firetruck? 4×4? Ice-cream van? You name it, we’ve had it on the Mongolia Charity Rally. Your chosen vehicle will be like a third nipple to you by the time you get to Mongolia. You’ll cherish it fondly, but be glad to part with it. That’s where we come in: we’ll take your beloved charitable chariot to its next home. If it’s an ambulance, it will get used in our charity project. 4x4s are typically donated to other NGOs, and commercial vehicles and cars get sold at auction for way more than they are worth in Europe, with the proceeds invested in Go Help’s charity projects in Mongolia that you’ll see on arrival. The Mongolian government is, to put it mildly, very strict about what cars it allows in to Mongolia, so we’ll help you with vehicle selection, not to worry.

Hit your fundraising target. This charity rally has three objectives, first: charity. Second, did we mention charity? Third: charitable adventuring. Teams rundraise a minimum of £1,000 for Go Help, the charity that founded the Mongolia Charity Rally, and above that can fundraise for any awesome cause that captures their heart. Hopefully Go Help, but if not, any one that does.

Find some sponsors. No trust fund? No problem. Many teams make it to Mongolia on a shoestring budget. That being said, life is a lot easier with generous benefactors. Teams are supported by a vast array of corporate sponsors (Subaru provided a whole car to one of our teams!), employers (corporate matching rocks), friends and family (hello, long lost relations). Key here is to pound the pavement, this charity rally really sells itself.

Beat the bureaucracy. You probably need a visa or two to get to Mongolia. Maybe even an entry permit to get in to Mongolia. Secret code to get in to Turkmenistan? Check. With a little help from us (to make sure your ‘T’s are crossed and ‘i’s are dotted, and to ensure everyone is fully prepared), you’ll set off from Brussels, not to be seen again until you reach Mongolia!

The Mongolia Charity Rally is the charity rally from London to the capital of MongoliaUlaanbaatar. The Mongolia Charity Rally is organised by Charity Rallies, part of Go Help, a UK-based charity.

Participants start the 10,000-mile (16,000 km) trip from a Mongolian Naadam festival in London, England.[citation needed] The vehicles are then driven to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where they are donated to a partner charity of Go Help for auction. Charity Ralliers must raise a minimum of £1,500 for UK charity Go Help, that runs Charity Rallies, through Go Help's JustGiving page, before departing.[citation needed] The main beneficiary of the 2008 and 2009 Mongolia Charity Rally was Save the Children.[citation needed]

The Mongolia Charity Rally launches from Highbury Fields in Islington, London. Go Help and the Mongolian Association organise a Mongolian Naadam to see Charity Ralliers off on their adventure, an event that is heavily attended by the Mongolian community in London, and was featured on ITV Local,[1] a UK television network.

The main routes to Mongolia are either the Northern Route, from London to Mongolia via Moscow, or the Southern Route, via TurkmenistanUzbekistanKazakhstan and Russia.
