Kinsley Mary Henrietta (w2135)

Kinsley Mary Henrietta (w2135)

  • Description: Mary Henrietta Kingsley was a British explorer and writer who defied social conventions and gender stereotypes to travel through West Africa in the late 19th century. The daughter of a doctor, she set off on her own after her parents’ deaths in 1892, venturing into then little-known regions of Gabon, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon. She paddled canoes up rivers, sailed on small trading vessels, and trekked through rainforests, collecting specimens for the British Museum. Her book Travels in West Africa (1897) blends ethnographic observation, wit, and an independent spirit. She died in 1900 in South Africa, where she had volunteered as a nurse during the Second Boer War
