- Description: George Matthew Schilling left New York in 1897 dressed in newspapers and without money. He crossed the United States, Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and returned to New York in 1905, after covering 53'000 miles. In 1908, he set off again, this time accompanied by an "Air-Ship", a sort of vehicle disguised as a dirigible, headed for Great Britain and Europe. Even more bizarrely, in 1911, he started a world tour on foot with a globe depicting the planet with a diameter of 7 feet, inside which he slept: it also had space for food and tools, a bed, a lamp, and a corner for the dog. In total, he traveled 118'000 miles
